Three-day employment assessment

Start date: Flexible

The programme is suitable for someone who is unemployed and unsure about which area of employment that they are best suited to and in need of some help, advice and direction.

College Employment Assessors work with trainees for three days to look at their skills, capabilities and strengths. Assessors also look at how a trainee's disability affects the way that they work.

At the end of the three days an action plan is drawn up with the trainee, which will give direction and confidence to aim for an employment goal. This may include further training, areas to look for employment and other places to go for help.

Six-nine week Work Preparation

Start date: Flexible

This is an individually tailored course designed to help you to return to work following a period of unemployment or sickness.

During a six-week programme trainees would be able to develop specific skills such as using IT and access technology, gaining work experience, how to search for jobs, completing application forms and preparing for interviews.

This programme is also suitable for people who are currently in employment and at risk of losing their job because of a disability.

At the end of the programme some people progress into job hunting or employment and others into further training.

Two months' study has helped me get a job - I would recommend it to anyone!

Six-month Employment Programme

Start dates: February and September

This programme is designed for people who are unemployed, but at the moment do not feel work ready and need a longer time to develop their employment skills.

Over the six months that trainees spend at the College they develop the basic skills that they need for work such as using IT and access technology, office and administration skills, customer services, work experience and jobseeking skills.

As with all the other college employment programmes, we look at the trainee on an individual basis and put together a personalised programme which is aimed to give them the skills and confidence that is currently preventing them from finding employment.

Because of the emphasis placed on work placements and employment skills, this programme has very successful outcomes for employment. Past trainees have gone on to find employment in administration, office work, customer services, reception work, telephony, sales and retail.

I have gained nearly ten qualifications and am studying hard to gain a few more before I leave. I have also regained my self-confidence and self-respect
